When you are staying in hotels in Japan, you don’t even need your tooth brush. Maybe you can pack much less when coming to Japan.
What amenity are generally there?
In general, shampoo, conditioners, body soap, hand soap, tooth brush, are provided in the room. Recently, in order to reduce plastic wastes, shampoo, conditioner, body soap and hand soap are installed in the bathroom in many hotels. Some luxury hotels may have small bottle of shampoo, conditioner and body soap in the room which you can take home with you if you like.
In many hotels, they also have razor, Q tips, cotton, and shower cap, brush or comb.
Some hotels may have: Slippers you can take home (ones that are in plastic bags), Lady’s set (small package of basic skin care) Men’s set (shaving cream and basic skin care), sewing kit
Also recently, for ecological reasons, sometimes amenities are not in the room but you can pick up near the reception. In this way, people can take only what they need.
What are in the room?
In general, towels, hair drier, slippers, hangers and sometimes trouser press are in the room. Also, electric kettles or coffee maker is in the room. They also have tea cup and/or glasses with green tea tea bags, also often coffee (sometimes instant coffee, sometimes coffee capsul)
What can you borrow?
Depending on the hotel, you may ask the hotel for humidifier, adaptor for electric appliances, iron and iron board, sewing kits, thermometer, ice bag/ice pack, umbrella.
I have been to hotel where you can ask pillows and aroma oil for better sleep.
Onsen and Ryokans
Onsen and Ryokan usually have yukata (cotton kimono you can wear when you go to bath) and sash in the room. In onsen and ryokan, you can wear Yukata and slipper to go to public bath. (You don’t have to if you don’t feel like it but it’s easier)
They will also have small plastic bag that has amenities such as towel, tooth brush, hair tie in it. You can take this amenity pouch to public bath. Shampoo, conditioner and body soap are installed in bathroom so you don’t need to take it from your room. However, they don’t have towels in public bath so you need to take your towels from your room.
