Cherry Festival (Sakura Matsuri)

General Information

Cherry Festival (Sakura Matsuri or 桜まつり in Japanese) is held in many places.

Today, I saw some Cherry Festivals in Tokyo

Nihonbashi

Between Tokyo Station (Yaesu Exit) and Nihonbashi Takashimaya Department Store, there is a street called Sakura Dori (literally translated Cherry Street) A part of the street is closed for people to enjoy cherry blossoms.

It was a nice day for cherry blossom viewing. There were food stalls and people were enjoying cherry blossom and food.

Nakameguro

Along the Meguro River not far from Nakameguro Station, cherry blossom are in full bloom. There are lanterns and festive atmosphere. There are food stands and people are enjoying strolling the area.

Imperial Palace

This photo was taken near the Kitanomaru Koen near the Budokan Hall. Chidorigafuchi (千鳥ヶ淵)area of the Imperial Palace is especially famous.

As you can see, it was extremely crowded today. It would be less crowded if you go early in the morning, especially on weekdays. Cherry blossoms in the National Theater (Kokuritsu Gekijo 国立劇場) were in full bloom today (April 5, 2025.)

Please also check the weather forecast. Cherry blossoms do not last very long. Usually, after they start to bloom, it would last only about 1 week. If it rains or if it’s windy, blossoms fall.
