Riding Bicycle in Japan

You may like to ride bicycle in Japan. There are bike-share service and share cycle services in town and some rent-a-cycle shops in many tourist spots, too. There are some rules that may be different from your country.

Bicycle basically run on the left side of the road for vehicles

Bicycle must run on the road for vehicles. If you have to use the sidewalk, pedestrians have the right of way.

Bicycle can run on left side of side strip

On the road, bicycle must stay on the left side.

Bicycle can run on sidewalk if there is sign that says “Bicycles allowed”

You will see sign. Sometimes, it is printed on the sidewalk.

Bicycle must stop at stop sign

When you see stop sign, you must stop.

Bicycle must follow signals

Bicycle may pass zebra but pedistrians have the right of the way. If there are many pedistrians, you must get off ffrom the bicycle and walk. When turning right, bicycle must go straight and then, turn right. Even if the signal for cars have right turn signal, bicycle must follow this rule.

In changing lanes, biker must look around for safety

Cyclists must not change lane to make cars following have to use sudden breaks and sudden change of course. 後車に迷惑を及ぼす進路変更の禁止 Fine under 50,000 yen.

Bicycle must turn on light at night

After dark, cyclists must turn on light so that cars can see them. It is recommended to put reflecter as well.

Don’t drink and ride

5 years of inprisonment or fine up to 1 million yen.

Biker must wear a helmet

Bikers must not use smartphone when riding or headphone. Bikers must not use umbrella while riding.

Parking

There are places where you cannot park your bicycle such as near the train station. It is recommended to find bicycle parking area.
