Mt. Fuji opened for climbing on today (July 1)
There are things you need to know if you want to climb Mt. Fuji.

When can you climb Mt. Fuji?
Mt. Fuji opens on Jully 1 and is open until September 1.(Fujinomiya Trail, Gotemba Trail, and the summit (crater rim walk) are scheduled to open on July 10th.) If you want to climb Mt. Fuji, please plan on coming to Japan during this period. Other times, you can go up to 5th Station by car or bus. There are some shops/restaurants. If you visit there by bus tour, they usually go up to this 5th Station and have about an hour or so free time to look around and take photos. Weekends and holidays, Obon (week around August 13 to 15) would be extremely crowded, so if possible, avoid those days. Congestion_Forecast_Calendar2026_EN.png (1200×675)
Fee for entering Mt.Fuji
If you wish to climb Mt. Fuji, you will need \4,000 to go beyond the gate on 5th station. The gates are closed between 14:00-3AM the next morning.
This year (2006) at Yoshida trail, you can pay by cash, credit card or QR code. Number of entry is limited to 4,000 people/day at Yoshida trail, so I recommend you arrive there early.
For 3 other trails (Fujinomiya, Subashiri, Gotemba in Shizuoka prefecture), there are no limits to number of entrance but you are recommended to preregister and pay the fee in advance through FUJ INAVI app. Cancellations are accepted up until the day before the gate entrance. (After you pass the gate, you cannot cancel.) Mt. Fuji Shizuoka pref If you don’t have a smartphone, you’ll need to fill out the documents, complete the e-learning course, and pay the mountain entrance fee on-site (at the 5th Station). This takes about 30 minutes; during peak season, there may be a wait.
At the gate, there will be staffs checking your gear. (separate rain wears, warm clothes, adequate shose)
What do you need?
You are required to have rain wears (need separate rain jacket and rain trousers.) If you do not have separate rain wears, you must buy them at nearby shops. If you have them at home, please bring it. Good hiking boots/trecking shoose are necessary. Near the summit, temperature can drop to 0C (32F) before sunrise, it is recommended to bring clothes suitable for that, too. Average temperature above 8th station in July is 5C (41F) so bring winter clothes (such as fleece and down), shell jacket and layer of inner, knit cap, neck warmer, glove etc. Other than that, please do not forget head lamp, hiking map, water, snacks/energy food, cash and 100 yen coins (for mountain huts and toilets) , sunscreen, sunglasses, first-aid kit (band aids, pain relieaver etc).
Model to climb Mt. Fuji
There are 4 routes to go up. All trailheads start from the 5th station, each routes are different and access is different. Please plan ahead and choose the routes that suit you the best.
Do not attempt overnight climbs without staying in mountain huts (avoid “bullet climbs”). Many Japanese people start climbing in the afternoon and stay at mountain hut and try to climb before sunrise so that we can see sunrise at the summit. If you’d like to do so, you need to make reservation for the hut, too. Yoshida Trail Mountain Huts
